Biography
Niyah McGee-Hawkins is a Black digital and traditional artist from Richmond, Virginia. She started creating at a young age, but in 2023, she began to push her creativity into a career. She furthered her skill and experience by joining art programs and residency’s over the past few years. She mainly focuses on portrait illustrating; with developments in character design and storytelling. She often uses bright colors in her artwork, along with expressive shapes. She enjoys sharing her art process, and progression through short videos on social media. Her goal is to grow her online audience, and make longer form content to connect with other art lovers.
Statement
When expressing myself through art, I often lean towards the use of vibrant, saturated colors. I work to display my improvement in skill, creativity and expression. With the goal to create short emotional stories in my work, I challenge myself to use new mediums and subjects. My recent body of work reflects soft Black experiences, ancestral connection and creative community protection. I want the viewer to feel a cozy sensation when witnessing my work. I want Black folks to feel seen.
